A while back, my mother and I went out to get her a new desktop computer from the bargain bin(first problem). We went out and got a $350 compact ghetto machine that despite being weak and underpowered, can run a shockingly large amount of games on medium settings(and some on high) with a 6550D graphics card that has only 512mb of video memory.

The CPU is pretty easily overclocked, but in itself is powerful enough as it is in even the stock setup.

Then my mother went out and bought a laptop under my supervision. But first she went out and bought a ridiculously cheap refurbished laptop that couldn't even run facebook games, of which we exchanged for something significantly better in comparison. She left the questionable desktop to me an my sister to use for whatever we willed. EX: Sisters schoolwork and Sims games, me playing pretty much video games on whichever settings get the best FPS/quality ratio.

The video card is becoming a major hindrance with its weakness, becoming completely unable to play the most modern video games at all now(like literally most recent, such as saints row 4 and etc).

The hard drive is 1.5TB which is perfectly fine, even substantially larger then some full on gaming pc's so that is alright.

The CPU is pretty well fine. Most, if not all video games these days don't really care about the CPU as long as its a relatively good quad core, or a high end dual core.

Everything is pretty much fine with it except for the Video Card. With how compact this desktop is, about 12 x 4 x 16, I'm wondering if I have to get a new case, disassemble this current one, and transfer everything over in order to get the room needed to upgrade it. Would I have to get a new case and do so, or would I have enough room.

Or if it is even possible to upgrade the GPU rather then end up going into a negligible "dual graphics/CrossfireX" mode that scarcely does anything unless you start off with a comparable computer in the first place.

I am also going to college soon, and am most likely getting money from OSAP for tuition and necessities. A better computer being one of them, if its not provided with the coarse already, since the coarse is programming/modelling based and kinda NEEDS me to have a rather decent computer to even stand a chance at doing anything outside of campus. So is it worthwhile to try and save this computer, or wait until further notice?

Really going to depend on the exact make/model number of the system you purchased. It may be possible to add a discrete graphics card (whether you use Hybrid CrossfireX or not), but we'd need to know if you even have an expansion slot and whether or not you're able to upgrade the power supply.
