Time to move on from LGA1366/I7-930. Need Upgrade Suggestions

After recently diagnosing that my memory issue (detecting only 4gb when I have 6gb) is attributed to a bad memory slot on my motherboard (GA-X58A-UD3R), I believe it is time for me to move on from the short-lived LGA1366 socket. Because of the reliability I've had with this socket and the rest of my computer from 2010 to up to this point, I have been out of the loop about the best CPUs and motherboard combinations that today's market has to offer. Because of this, I'm looking to the fine people of this forum to help me on my journey through the current tech era.

I'm not searching for anything that is top-of-the-line, but something that is reliable and will last me for generations to come. I've heard of Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge but have no idea which specific CPU is the best of the bunch.

I don't want to put a budget on this project since I'm planning to save for 3 months or so when Black Friday rolls around, but if you need a number, we're looking at $500 for a cpu/motherboard combination give or take. No worries about RAM, as I'll be fine finding these myself.

I don't plan on upgrading from my paltry 2x GTX460 SLI combo since I don't plan on playing graphically-intensive games, but please consider that I'm looking for SLI compatibility.

My main focus on this computer is multitasking (I use a multiple-monitor setup and shift from program to program regularly), gaming (but not high-end), and everyday CPU usage. Pretty much your typical "ideal" bang-for-buck computer.

I want to thank anyone in advance that decide to give me suggestions. I will greatly appreciate anyone that takes time out of their day to help a fellow PC enthusiast catch up with the times. Thanks so much!

Sorry that I haven't been staying on top of this thread since posting. It's been a busy weekend! Thank you porkchop and werner for the information! And werner, seeing that I'm biased towards Intel, I'm probably going to give the I5 4670 a look over the FX 8350. But thank you so much for the comparison! It is very much appreciated!

I'm going to go ahead and look up more information on the 4670k and go through the motherboards you have posted as well. Thanks again!
