Hi Guys,

I've been out of the IT game for almost 10 years now... last computer I built myself was around 2009/2010. I've got a Gigabyte M85M-US2H motherboard (rev A2) with an Athlon 2 X2 250 cpu and 4gb of DDR2 RAM.

Basically I want to upgrade the CPU and RAM and I'd like to know what's the best CPU and RAM I can put into this thing... I'm afraid I know virtually nothing about hardware these days.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Salad

Hi, the best CPU that motherboard will support with the F10 bios is the Phenom II X4 945 which has been discontinued. A for memory 4GB is still enough. But It's definitely not worth upgrading/buying components for that board. I would recommend spending that money on a new AM3+ motherboard and DDR3 memory. Your current CPU is compatible with the AM3+ socket and you will be able to upgrade to AMD's FX 8 core CPU's later on. What is your budget and online retailer you would be buying from if you were to take me up on my recommendation?

Hi Werner,

Thanks for this - sounds like a very sensible solution. Let's say £150-£200 for the board and ram?

Cheers,
