Hi

I have a Lenovo Y580 notebook with 6GB RAM installed. I want to expand to 12 GB (Lenovo says the maximum is 8, but a number of other people on the web have installed 16 with no problem).

My question: is there a compatibility problem having one 4GB module and one 8GB module installed ? Presently, there is one 4GB module and one 2GB module installed.

The OS is Windows 7 HP.

Thanks.

I believe there are certain MB's that will allow you run in dual channel mode with different capacity ram sticks. 8+4GB should work fine but your laptop will likely perform better with a matched pair. Although the difference between dual and single channel won't be too noticeable. I have a single 8GB stick in my HTPC, can't really tell the difference from when I had 4+4GB.

thanks to everyone for responding

@ Tradesman1

it won't be an online purchase
would you definitely not do it, and only put in modules of the same capacity ?
also, do both modules have to have the same speed ? -- according to crucial i can use either PC3-12800 or PC3-14900

thanks
