Can't reinstall after dban

Hi. I used dban to wipe my netbook before selling it (Asus Eee Pc 1018P). I had made a recovery disc of the Windows 7 starter beforehand, to reinstall after wiping. Now I can't reinstall Windows. I can install Linux Peppermint 4 so I guess it is a Windows thing. Have read up a lot and got nowhere! I then thought maybe my recovery disc was corrupted, so downloaded the ISO from digital river. It gets as far as custom installation, shows the drive partitions (there are two - both are called 0. A message at the bottom says Windows can't instal on these as they need to be NTFS. In Peppermint 4 I used gparted to check the drives - they are formatted as NTFS apparently, so I don't know what the problem is. I guess somehow I have to reformat/partition the drives so windows can accept them or something? Am a total novice really - just tried some of these things after some research. Any help gratefully accepted. I want to sell it with the original OS on it.

Now I haven't installed an OS for a while but from what I recall on the screen where you select the HD their is a "format button" if you click that then it will convert it into the right file system for windows. (I also believe the only way to get this option you need to do the Advanced route instead of the Manuel can you please try this and then get back to me with the results.
Good Luck

Hi. Thanks for that. I did try that before, but it still came up with the same message about not being able to install on the drive as it needed to be ntfs. I'll try it again though ...............back in 10 mins!

Ok - I fiddled around a bit more this time, and it seems to be installing Windows. Not quite sure what happened. I deleted both partitions, made two new ones (one smaller one for the Windows software) and clicked format and it came up with some message about making an extra one for something or other - so ended up with 3 partitions. The one Windows made of 100mb, one of 43 gb and a main one of about 200gb. I think maybe I have left myself with too small a storage partition (200gb) - but wasn't sure how big to make the other one to allow for future Windows updates. Anyway it seems to be installing now - watch this space to see if it installs successfully ......

And THANK YOU for your help.

Update: Not very successful! Windows 7 Starter installed. Screen resolution was all to pot and no option to adjust it. But I thought maybe it just needed activating first. I had followed the instructions from a Microsoft site to do this installation - here - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/where-can-i-buy-windows-7-starter-in-english-on-a/01655e65-229e-4a44-8805-9c6ab9e3dd9b?msgId=af28ff8c-7c5d-49f0-b2cb-ffdbdb52fd3f. So, following those instructions, I entered the product key from my netbook and phoned up to activate it. The Lady on the phone was quite abrupt and said she was putting me through to Customer Services (I think in the US). End result - I wasn't given an activation code - my email address and phone number were taken and I was asked where I had found the link to digital river (I explained, from a Microsoft website). I was informed that the thing to do is contact Asus for a recovery disc, so I guess that is the next step. Except - will the recovery disc give me the option to do the partition thing again? Or, will it be like my back-up recovery disc and just not work? I believe they cost £35 from Asus. I was only going to sell the blooming netbook for £50!

Honestly unless your selling it to a friend it probably will be better just to sell it with no OS or the unlicensed copy.
What does it say in Display - Screen res?
Also try doing a windows update that might fix it.
OEM software usually is tied to your motherboard so Microsoft should let you reactivate it for free.

Thanks. That is what I said - I have a product key and just want to activate the software, but the guy on the phone wasn't playing ball and said the digital river download wasn't OEM etc etc and I shouldn't have used it. Might just sell it with Peppermint 4 on!

Ok. I sent off for the recovery discs from Asus - cost £28 including postage. Decided I'll keept the blooming thing, upgrade it with an ssd and dual boot with Windows 7 and joli os. I was only selling it to go towards a new laptop, but decided it's worth keeping - they don't make netbooks any more and it's the lightest 10" one. So at least I've learned to be careful using dban! (ie don't delete the recovery partition!) Turns out the recovery disc I made only recovers the image, and doesn't reinstall the image. And there was no image to recover. So this isn't clear when you make a recovery disc of Windows 7 starter.

Can't find a good used laptop with Windows 7 on anyway, so will stick with my 10" netbook for now and upgrade Partner's laptop. Many thanks for your help.
