I'm going to be purchasing a new SSD for my computer in a couple of weeks, but can't seem to find a suitable answer to this.

Is there a way to migrate my current windows 8 key to my new SSD? I don't want any files moved to it, just a clean install but with the same key. I don't mind if this disables the key on my current HDD as I will only use it for file storage afterwards.

Is this possible or will I need to purchase a new key?

hmm, this depends. Did you happen to purchase the oem product or a retail version of win 8?

Yes it will work.

Worst case you'll have to call Micro$ofts automated support and give them a VERY long set of keys from your machine and they will provide an activiation back.

If it doesn't take the key when you install - install without it - you have 3 days to activate. Once you're into windows there will be an option to activate via phone. Call the number - input the codes - they'll give you an activation code to put back in.

Ok thanks, I had heard about the phone activation but relieved it can actually be done.
