Hi,

I've just bought my self one of the asus Maximus VI Gene mATX motherboards. One of the main reasons of doing this was the onboard sound that was "advertised" and states on the chip itself is creative X-FI supremeFX II sound! i wanted the ability to have a higher than normal quality of on board sound due to wanting to clog up all pci ports on the back.

however now that i have it all in i see that it is actually realtek, no different than any other motherboard that i could have bought for less money!

have i somehow installed the wrong drivers for this or was i being blatantly lied to by asus?

Any on board sound is going to not be that great period. The only difference is some software enhancements that the board mancfacture provides. Currently Gigabyte has the best on board audio with the creative sound core 3d, but it still is not that great. The only good onboard sound that I have heard is the old Asus suppreme fx 2 with the analog devices sound max codec. But, if sound is a big deal for you, like it is for me... Get the last true sound card that creative made, witch is the X-fi Titanium. The titanium has pcie and is just the more expensive fatal1ty edition without the worthless cover. Or an asus rog xonar card, but I would recommend the X-fi.

The top the the line X-fi processor used in the titanium is the last audio...

The top the the line X-fi processor used in the titanium is the last audio processor made by creative, that accually has the power to do every thing on it's own, the sound core 3d is basically a codec with some hyped up parts on the rest of the card. Infact auzentech still uses the X-fi chip on there sound cards.

First thing, your board has suppreme fx, not suppreme fx 2, suppreme fx x-fi, just juppreme fx. The suppreme fx 2 that I was refering to is the onboard audio included with some of the rog lga 775 boards, it was acually a daughter board that used a pcie slot, and had an analog devices codec, wich are some of the best codecs. even the original suppreme fx would be better then what Asus put on your board. What you have is some new thing that they call suppreme fx, they are just reusing the name. It shows up as realtek in device manager, because that is what it is, a Reatek codec with some custom asus software. There are no better drivers that you can use, the asus ones are going to be better then realek's own drivers.

You can get a X-fi titanium used on ebay for about $50, once you hear a true sound card, you will never go back.
