Hi guys,

I'm looking to add some more RAM to my overclocked system. Currently ive got 2 2GB sticks in.

I'm looking to buy exactly the same type of memory as I currently have except it will be 2 4GB sticks. If I simply switch out the old RAM for the two new sticks will I need to change any of my Overclock timings?

Solution
You will need to reset your cmos or turn everything memory related to auto.
You cant fire up on clocked timings with twice the ram because the timing set
needs to be looser. It wont post .

Obviously, once she is running you can tweak ram timings again, (if you can be bothered) but you wont get the same ram o/clock. Enough ram is more relevant than ram speed and timings unless you use an apu. Dont be upset if you can feel little difference in games with the extra ram, cos for 1 task at a time 4 gig is enough. For e.g. going from 2 gig to 3 gig is vast. A solid 40% improvement. go from 3 to 4 gig 25%. four gig to 8 maybe 6 % in a few games. Feel free to pick a best answer..

As mentioned, if Intel and 1600 or better, and you simply enable XMP there will be no tweaking required...If it's under 1600 it will go to default, again generally no tweaking of DRAM required. Nothing is mentioned about gaming (though could be a somewhat logical assumption, though basically all rigs I build are OCed for performance - few are actually gaming rigs)....Talks about an overclocked system - not about OCed RAM - SYtem normally refers to CPU 1st, then GPU, DRAM is last and seldom done. 8GB is basically the quickly becoming standard for systems - even most all prebuilts these days are 6-8 GB

I understand your points, and mine is probs out of date.
Tho he did talk of his o/c'd system and was referring to ram specifically,
so i made the leap to him using custom timings.
I appreciate most systems come with 8 gig, but tom's own figures show small gains in games over 4. Yes, I was pointing out ram tweaking hardly worth the bother. Praps I just got the wrong end of his stick? Easy done, and my advice still sound. Nobody else answered him, did they?

Btw, the amount of ram that is included in a retail system has no relevance to the amount required for best value performance. Twelve yrs ago ram cost £120 a gig so systems were sold with 256 meg. Now ram is £5 a gig they are sold with 8 gig to impress the public. Its the same with graphics cards. .

Well. no harm done or meant. . The prob is time is valuable and mostly we read the question quick and answer the most obvious thing we think. Nobody pays us for this. Most posters dont even close with a best answer. Nearly half are from 3rd world countries trying to pick brains for free and earn off our experience,Even to a guy earlier asking how to build a pc and how much profit he could make? They dont even have the brains to see the liberty taking and think a pc is just a mechano kit.I only do this to improve my knowledge, but feel its worthless now.

'I am wanting helpings build my first P.c. What do you thinks I should Using,?
How much will the systems be worth when i sell it?
If that is not making money should i usings something else?
Pleese helpings! '
.....If you gave him nirvana he still wouldnt give you a best answer!

I have been fiddling with pc's for over a decade. Half the 'experts' on here are just out of school; I cant compete because I AM NOT YOUNG ENOUGH TO KNOW EVERYTHING! 80 % of them have no understanding of engineering, physics or mechanical principles at all.If they own a vehicle they couldnt tell you what plugs it runs, let alone what the ignition timing is. I think its bout time tom'd guys answered the questions cos a large proportion of respondents on here are teen fan kids. Sorry if that gets me chucked off, but there you are.

Your still one of the youngsters ;) (or I'm just a Dinosaur) I got started in systems with mainframes back in 1980....my oldest is an IT manager for the Air Force (with a degree in systems) and he still calls with questions (in fact he had some of his Professors when he was in college call me (he's not shy and would 'correct' them in class)

When I was 11 , I got chucked out of physics class for pulling the stand in teacher on archimeadies(cant spell him) eureka moment. She said anything dropped in water would displace water equivalent to its own mass and i said 'not if it sinks'.. I spent an afternoon stood outside the deputy heads office while he looked into it.
The next week we had the lesson again, and it was corrected.
Thats me, thats who I am. But I deffo aint a patch on you with pc's.
Two stroke water cooled engines, now thats me.
Electrical principles? yes. But the kids on here kno ah heck all. Nice to meet someone who does..

Also btw, we only had tandy radio shacks at my school, and i was FAR too busy planning how to get into josephine's knickers and build a 70 mph fantic motor moped to do my o'level computer studies exam. I failed to take the exam but the bike and Josephine were both a success thought impossible.
