So I would be building for the first time, but my problem is my whole house is basically carpet except for small small areas. are there any places recommended to build? my kitchen is very small and no room so thats out. thanks
I've built on a carpeted floor before, not too big a deal, just keep yourself grounded to the case with a band or something else (i use one like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=850427&is=REG&Q=&A=details) and your parts in their anti-static bags until they're going in the case. Keep something for screws to go in so you don't lose them into the carpet.
To stay grounded I touch the metal part of the case I'm working on, or so piece of metal...like a door knob.
I usually don't wear socks either because it's easy to create friction with them on if you're rolling around the floor which I usually ended up doing too.

If you have any plastic floor mats in your house, throw one of those down on the area where you plan to work, then scrub your desk when you're ready to build. This will reduce or eliminate static without the need for paying money for a static wrist strap.
