I am considering upgrading my gpu to the new radeon hd7990 or 7970 but want to determine if my 500 coolermaster psu can handle it.

My specs:
fx 6300
12gb ddr3@1033
1tb wd blue hdd
120gb ssd
4 120mm led fans
1 200mm led fan
And one of the two gpus listed above.

I did the math roughly and with the 7970 it will work but couldn't find definitive max wattage on the 7990.

Solution
For a system using a single AMD reference design Radeon HD 7990 graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 750 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 44 Amps or greater and have at least two 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Depends on which Coolermaster PSU you have. If its a GX, or extreme I wouldn't suggest running either as they are low quality and have major issues especially when under a load. If its a silent pro, silent gold or real power pro it may handle the 7970 but not the 7990. Its suggested to have a PSU with atleast 48a on the 12v rail for a 7990, 31a for a 7970 GHZ, and 30a for a 7970. If you are overclocking(which you will need to do for the 6300 to keep up with either) then you may want to add a couple amps for headroom.

for the 7990, I'd recommend a 650watts PSU, the 7990 it self consumes around 420watts and the whole system beside the GPU is probably ~150w. You'll be fine with a 7970 in the system since it consume only 250w... just know that im using the approximately "load" wattages, during normal usage and/or gaming usage, the system probably wont even touch 400w total with the 7970...

It may work, but it's not a good idea to run your PSU at capacity, you should always have some extra wattage over what you need so you're not straining the capacitors and circuitry at 100% of their capability. I'd jump up to 650 at least for the 7970 and higher for the 7990, the most i'd run on a (good) 500 watt is a 7870

What would a good oc be for this chip? I can get it up to 4200 stable but my temps get higher than I like, sometimes mid 60's.
