Hey all,

I currently have 4gb of DDR3 ripjaws ram (I got this ram in like 2008/2009, I dont remember the exact model of ram it is.). Anyways, I would like to get more. If I get another 4gb of the most recent DDR3 ripjaws ram, can I simply put it into the other two slots in my motherboard and it will work automatically? Or do I have to adjust the voltage or anything like that? Also, My ram slots are different colors. There are two black and two tan slots, each one after the other. So it goes black, tan, black, tan. I have both of mine in the tan. Should I put the new ones in the black slots, or put my old ones in the black slots and my new ones in the tan slots? (I think the tan is something like dual channel memory, something like that. I'm not exactly sure what that means though.

Thanks!

Typically, adding ram is as simply as plugging it in. Just ensure it is the same type (DDR2/DDR3) of ram as your original, and each stick in each colored pair of slots is the same or you can run into errors. By the way, I question weather your ram from 2008/2009 is actually DDR3. I would install CPUID which will tell you the type of ram, your slots, and its speed. There is also a crucial memory application to help you upgrade.

From my archaic knowledge, it used to be when you upgrade with faster or slower ram, the speed will be limited by your slowest set. I.e. 1333 and adding a 1600 module will limit both to 1333. Point being, don't waste money on a faster frequency unless you are going to upgrade all modules to a faster frequency.

Again, no modification of power or voltage necessary. And to run dual channel, the two sticks memory should be in the same color. Just make sure you buy the right type.
