Can i use some of the parts from a HP pc, for one i am to build?

Well as the title says, i have a HP pc at the moment, and i am going to build my own in a month or 2, but i am giving this to my dad, and he would like to upgrade a bit next year. So i am wondering whether or not some of the components will work. I heard something with you would need to buy a new motherboard, HDD & windows?. Any knowledge on this? :)

Upgrading a computer from any of the major manufacturer is not worth it. I speak from experience. Too much is borderline or non standard to work well. I actually had to cut areas in a Dell case to fit a motherboard in. Then the PSU is too marginal to upgrade. The front panel wiring wont reach.The list goes on and on.
