Hello all,

First, a quick explanation. I've been using the same homebuilt system for a couple of years, but I've been having overheating problems on and off throughout. The main components were:

Intel i5 2500k
Asus Maximum IV Gene-Z
2x4 GB Corsair 1600 MHz DDR3 Ram
Sapphire 7870
Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Corsair H60 CPU Cooler

I recently decided to move the components into a new case and try to improve the airflow. The rebuild went without too many problems. It seemed to work at first, and then, suddenly, it refused to stay on. After a couple of reboots, it refused even to post.

I went about disassembling to try to determine where the problem was. Since I have an Asus motherboard with the post LEDs, I took a closer look and noticed that the CPU LED was staying on. After removing the CPU from the socket, I found this:

Sorry for the crummy pictures, it's the best I could do. Anyway, at first I thought the damage might be due to my uninstalling and reinstalling the CPU cooler, but I was very careful not to overtighten the thumbscrews on the H60. What's more, this doesn't look like an issue with bent pins, but more like something actually burned on the CPU/socket. It's very hard to see in the pictures, but a few of the socket pins are discolored; it almost looks like some of the metal from the contacts on the CPU melted on to them!

Anyway, this is all speculation on my part. I would appreciate any ideas as to what may have caused this. Also, does it seem like the motherboard is going to need to be replaced, the CPU, or both? Thanks in advance!

Solution
looks like youre going to have to replace mb and cpu. what actually caused this is hard to say, maybe some thermal paste got on it, dust, or other foreign material.
