My old xp machine is going thanks to Apple so i thought i would have a play and format it.

I have XP sp3 discs so thought why not. foolishly I have removed d drive so is just one 80gb hard drive where as before it was 60gb on C drive and 20gb on D drive.

Now cannot reload Xp o/s getting the file prompt regarding Hal.dll prompt.

I think I have killed it according to all the threads

I did I back the C drive to an external HD but not got a clue which files I need to bring it back to life if I set the BIOS to read from external drive?

HELP! No data to be retrieved so anything goes.

Ok, update after a thread on here.

With the CDRom connected on its own the XP disc loads but appears to disable the keyboard as I cannot select ENTER or R or F3 to quit. Subsequently the disc stops .

If I have HDD connected also the graphics card throws a wobbler and gives ou some crazy acid style flashing font page.

I have a spare HDD which I have tried but get same problems.

Altered jumpers to be correct I think and BIOS is CDrom then HDD0.

So at least I get passed Hal.dll fault line now unless I connect all up normal. Which again seems to make the keyboard unusable as you cannot select the CDRom .

Tomorrows another day so hopefully I may get some feed back from you guys. Oh it is tomorrow! Damn you PC taking my life away!
