I will be getting an Asus ROG Maximus VI Hero Motherboard for my rig. Should I get an aftermarket sound card for it? I am looking at the ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus and the Asus Xonar Essence STX sound cards. If the cards are better then the MOBO's sound card, please tell me which card is better. And will those cards even work with the MOBO?

The on-board sound for that motherboard is pretty good. What is the rest of your sound system like? There's no point in investing $200 into a sound card unless you have a very nice surround sound setup and you want to play blurays on your computer (and even then I'd say you're better off getting a receiver or external dac/headphone amp).

yup, if you want to spend a couple hundred dollars for better sound. its more expensive but you will get better sound. its probably not worth it dollar for dollar for sound quality unless you are really into sound production or gaming. it is up to you whether its worth it or not. i dont have that sound card, i have a less expensive version and i was surprised with how much better the sound was. i thought it was going to be neglegable. i have $400 studio speakers.
