Hey there. I was looking around on Craigslist today, and came across a listing for a used Intel Core i7-950 and a EVGA X58 FTW3 mobo for only $100 each. From the looks of it, the guy was parting out a pretty decent computer, there was also two different power supplies and a EVGA GTX 470 video card (all of which I'm not really interested in, I'd rather find something newer/cheaper).

So I have a few questions: first off, are these parts worth the price? They seem a little dated so I'm already a bit unsure. If so, what parts would you recommend to complete the build? It should include a case, RAM, PSU, a graphics card and aftermarket CPU heatsink. For hard drive I'm thinking either a Seagate Barracuda or WD blue is good. May look into a SSD. I am on a pretty tight budget of around $550. If that isn't feasible, I suppose I could save up a bit longer too. I am looking to use this computer for gaming, schoolwork and possibly video editing.

Thank you all very much in advance. Sorry if I sound like a bit of a newbie, because I am lol.

I am running a Core i7-950 with an Asus P6X58D Premium board. I built it as a high performance system Dec 2010 (time flies!) and I am still quite happy with the performance. The only thing I am upgrading currently is video card, I had a MSI N460GTX and just bought a N770. The 460 wasn't bad but you could do better for

Memory is triple channel, I'm running G-Skill 12GB DDR3 PC1600 kit ($126 on newegg)

Apparently you can run 24 GB as well if you are going big. I was thinking of adding another 12GB to freshen my system and be able to a few more Hyper-V VMs.

I have been super happy with the liquid cooler, it's very quiet and running great for 3 years, if you are ok with $60

I *highly* recommend getting a SSD or PCI-E based Sandforce, at least as your OS/Boot drive. This is an amazing performance difference. I am booting to a OCZ RevoDrive OCZSSDPX-1RVD0120 PCI-E x4 120GB. This one is discontinued, but there are other great SSD deals for black Friday. This one is small, 110GB, but Newegg has a black Friday refurb for only $56. 530 mb/sec read, and this should work with this MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820228063

My case will blow your budget I think, it's a Cooler Master HAF X, $189. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119225

Hope that helps a bit.
