Hi, I've searched around but haven't found a definitive answer. I've just built my first computer centered around gaming, with a Sapphire HD 7990.

At idle, right after I turn my computer on, GPU-Z recognises both cores of my card at around 40-45 degrees. Then I played Skyrim for about 20 minutes to which the temperature rose to about 73/60 (core1/core2) and then quit. However it's been about an hour since I quit skyrim and GPU-Z is still telling me the temperatures are 72/55 even in idle. Can this post-gaming idle temperature be healthy?

As far as I see the ventilation in my computer seems fine, but right now I'm still yet to install 2 120mm exhaust fans on the top of my computer case. I'm only using the built in rear exhaust fan and front intake fan that came with my case (and any cpu/psu/gpu fans obviously). Should I really be expecting these idle temperatures until I buy two more additional fans? I'm quite worried this isn't how my GPU temp should be acting.

i do not believe the two extra additional fans wouldn't make a great deal of difference, if your case supports a side intake replace the front fan to the side and see if it helps with the temperatures.

Take the side panel / window off ya case....use a desk fan to blow ir in....if temps improve, then think about more case fans.

adding ventilation will most always decrease your temps.

if your 7990 is still "warm" after gaming then heat is staying in the case. adding the exhaust fans will help remove the heat; adding cool air to an already hot box only warms up the cool air - its thermal dynamics.

Thanks for the replies all. I took the side panel off and am using a desk fan to blow in air. The secondary core did actually decrease, but of the primary there was pretty much nothing. Here's a screen shot, why is my primary core working at a load of 99% at idle?;

Just a follow up in case anyone else has the same problem. It was either a bad driver or bad driver settings. I had the amd catalyst 13.8 beta driver while this problem was occuring. Completely uninstalled it and replaced with driver 13.4, now I get ideal ~45 degree ideal temperatures post gaming (and 0% gpu load).

best thing you can do is to grab driver fusion and clean uninstall your display drivers.
grab the latest 13.8 beta 2 driver

uninstall current driver and dont restart.
run driver fusion amd driver cleaner.
install latest driver as custom and only install display and hdmi driver and control centre.
