I recently purchased MSi GT70 Dragon Edition 2 and i was wondering if my CPU was bottlenecking my GPU or vice versa.

I DID perform one small "test" when i played Tomb Raider in windowed mode with MSi Kombuster and Task Manager open. MSi Kombuster tells you GPU temp and GPU load. Task Manager tells you CPU Speed and CPU utilization.

In game results were GPU temperature hitting around 82C and 99% load whereas CPU utilization was at 30% max (averaged around 23%) and cpu speed was about 3.27Ghz

my laptop specs are:

CPU: 2.4Ghz i7-4700MQ (up to 3.4Ghz)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 780M
RAM: 32GB RAM

If anything your CPU is overkill for any GPU weaker than a desktop's HD 7970. That CPU will never let you down! Pay attention now:
-It says 99% GPU use so your graphics card is being fully utilized
-It says 30% CPU use so only a third of your CPU is being used!

P.S. I have your same CPU and I have limited it to 1.3GHz while on battery and it doesn't lower my framerate in games at all. Not even in 64 player BF3 maps!

So in conclusion.... my CPU does NOT bottleneck my GPU and instead its my GPU that bottlenecks my CPU? that's interesting. just wanted to add my Tomb Raider in-game benchmarks here:

Average Frames per Second: (V-sync off)
Low: 198
Normal: 142.6
High: 99.6
Ultra: 68.2
Ultimate: 40.8

Now my question is, how come on notebookcheck. com when i look up the 780M graphics card it says they got the follow FPS for Tomb Raider:

Low: 385.1
Med: 231.9
High: 156
Ultra: 65

Why do mine differ so greatly?

Same thing happened with my 765m recently! I overclocked it and checked it against Metro: LL on NB check and I was majorly under-performing. So here's what I did:

-Update the Nvidia drivers to the newest version

-Make 100% sure ALL of your settings are exactly the same as the ones used on NB check.

-Hook up a secondary monitor or have MSI afterburner record your clocks,Temps, etc while you are benchmarking. Make sure it isn't throttling due to using too much power. I hypothesized that my 120w power supply wasn't providing enough power for my 55w GPU, 47w CPU, and the rest of my components. Especially since I had applied a massive +25% performance OC to my GPU which would inevitably consume more power. Use your windows advanced power options to limit the CPU to 99% use so it wont turbo and it will stay at ~2.4GHz and consume near half the power!
