I just finished a new build and I'm using Windows 7 home premium from an old HP that I had from 2009, problem is, for some reason the Windows Activation window started to show and my copy is genuine.. should I put the product key (which I still have) from the old computer to validate the copy?

Thanks in advance.

Note: I once tried doing this on another computer that was having the same problem and after a restart windows failed to boot and then it said window copy was not genuine, even after I validated it and it said validation was successful.

Solution
Going through the on-line activation and calling the number they provide is the quickest and easiest, and it's generally approved every time
If the copy of windows is an OEM copy, which means you didn't buy it personally it came on the computer, it's not supposed to be transferrable to the new computer. It's locked to the HP motherboard. You could call Microsoft, they would be able to help you more than here in this particular case, I have heard of them activating Windows on new machines with OEM copies, I guess it just depends on who you get and how good your story is.
