First post on here so sorry if it isn't in the right section.

Need some help finding the culprit of my BSOD. So far, I have narrowed it down to the gpu or psu being the cause. I used to play on a 720p monitor just fine, these problems started happening ever since i upgraded to 1080p.

Btw i can get my games to run fine on the lowest settings, but my video card should be able to handle at least medium settings. (I think)

I was monitoring my temps during a match of battlefield 3 and when it crashes my gpu's temps are usually around 68-70c.

My specs are:

msi g46 motherboard
xfx 7770 ultra oc edition
generic ddr3 1333 mhz
lepa n500 500w psu
fx-6300 3.5 ghz

Is it possible my psu is not giving enough power ? Or is my video card dying ?

Solution
Did you put your 7770 back in the system after running the 220?
Did the games crash again.
Before installing the 7770 did you wipe out all the Nvidia stuff on your machine.
I think the current popular program for that is Driver Fusion, available at majorgeeks.com.
If you run it, have it just delete everything Nvidia.
You can also do most of it maually through 'Programs and Features' in W7 control panel.
You will probably have to reboot or shutdown and restart; you probably will have to reinstall your Radeon drivers. then try again.

Since the 220 ran, it sounds like your video card is bad. Is it still under warranty? (Are you luck enough to have one with a lifetime warranty?

I am assuming the PSU is relatively new. That unit more then meets the minimum spec. for your video card (which are 500Watts total system power and 19amps on the 12V rail(s)).
That being said, I would suspect first the drivers and//or video card settings (in Catalyst Control Panel)
Then the video card itselt.
Can you borrow another ATI/Radeon card to try?

At the moment i do not have another amd video card to try. I did try an old gt 220 and although i got shitty frame rates it did not crash. The psu is about 2 1/2 months old. I have tried a couple of drivers 13.5 , 13.8 beta, and i also tried the ones that came with my video card but still the same problem.

yup, I'm pretty familiar with cleaning up the drivers after you've used a nvidia card and back to ati. I used driver sweeper instead though. I looked on the box and yes i do have the lifetime warranty! Do you think Xfx will replace my card ? I have never been through rma process.

Yes, I am sure they will. Did you register it? Sometimes that is what is needed for the lifetime warranty.
Give them a call and advise what you have done to check it out, especially swapping in another card; they should RMA it.
Had problems with EVGA 7800GT Super Clocked cards years ago (I believe Nvidia just settled the law suit over those chips, in Canada, within the last 3 months) and though EVGA ain't XFX they were very helpful.
Keep us posted. If a new card doesn't correct the problem, there are other things to trouble shoot.

Hi - agree with nostall, that PSU has 34 +12v amps and your system can run on 19, the OEM is
CWT, which is not bad, they tend to make average to above average PSU's, looks like a bad vid card.

Okay, so i registered my card at their support website and my warranty was verified. I sent them a support ticket so now i guess i just wait. In this situation, do you guys think it would be better to call them directly ?

I had a similar problem recently, it sounds like a weird sort of driver conflict.

The bit of wisdom I was given is that, when switching GPU vendors, it's best to do a reformat. Clearing out all the drivers the way you did probably had the same effect, so a reformat might be overkill at this point, but, still, I just felt like putting that out there as an example of how much of a pain dealing with drivers can be.

Did your system save any .dmp minidump files (usually under the "minidump" folder in the Windows directory). You might be able to take a look at them, and with a bit of research, help yourself to narrow down what might be the source of the issue. Like mentioned, I recently had a similar problem after switching GPU vendors, even after reformatting, and it turned out that my new drivers just conflicted with some plug-in on Firefox. My means are limited, and I couldn't fix the problem, so I just switched browsers... Silly drivers, why do they have to be weird to deal with?

Did they give you an RMA number yet? If they did or when they do you will be sending in your old card following their instructions. Might not be a bad idea to call them, if you don't mind playing the "select a number from our recently changed menu" game on the phone.

Finally recieved my RMA number. From what i understood, I only have to pay the shipping to them. Here's the link they gave me http://xfxstorage.com/Support/pca_rma_tc_ns.pdf

what do you guys think ?

Send it off. Yes, they will pay the shipping BACK to you, but you pay the shipping to them. Recommend UPS or FedEX so that you get a tracking #. If replacing the card would cost more then $100 USD, then buy the extra insurance; incase the shipper messes it up or it gets lost.
