System specs now

Mobo: Asus ROG Crosshair v formula
CPU: AMD phenom II x4 965BE stock clocked
GPU: MSI HD7950 boost edition 3Gb DDR5
HDD: WD Cav Black 1Tb
RAM: Kingston HyperX blue 1600
PSU: ThermalTake 600watt
case: NXZT Phantom

i overclocked it today just to run a test to see what kind of advantage i got, x19 multiplier put it in the 4.0 range and honestly i ran Arma 3 and with everything on high it got 25 -30 fps same as stock clocks. but that was in the combined arms scenario. i like to game and browse youtube. ive had the rig for a year but im hearing alot of good things coming from Intel, the amd 8350 is just too hot and pulls to many watts for my office room. Im looking at the I5 3570k i will be overclocking, i got the cooler master evo on order as of now, but i got alot in the mobo, so i guess to my question will intel give me better performance that i will be able to notice? nothing on the amd seems to be worth the money, as in puttin 200 on 8350 vs 220 on an intel 3570k, 4670k. would you go haswell or stick with ivybridge? good mobo advice would be great too, ive been reading for a while but want solid answers?

You already have a great platform, as others mentioned. My 2 cents: upgrade to the 8350 and upgrade your ram to 1866. The 8350 supports it and it will help yield even more performance.

Some may say it's not worth the upgrade from 1600 to 1866 ram, but my mentality is if you do that now, the system will be optimized and good to go for many years. Put the rest of your budget towards an ssd like you mentioned and enjoy the blazing fast speed. ;)

thanks for the fast response, it is appreciated, i dont know where i read this but it said that amd clock speed of 4.0 on each core isnt as fast or isnt the "Same" as it would be on intels core, i dont know if it was fanboy talk or ifi t was legit. id think 4.0 is 4.0, thats like saying 1600 is faster than 1600 other than loooking at the latency or timing. is there any truth to that?

Intel offer more performance in single core than AMD which is why that guy said that(Meaning if both are 4 core, with same clock, intel CPU will be faster). Your CPU is still quite powerful, it's most likely not your CPU, your getting the same "Gaming" experience as if you have a 4770k, the difference "WILL" show if the game support 8 threads and/or software that uses more threads than 4.

When you talked about 1600, your probably talking about RAM right? 8GB at 1600MHz with 8-8-8-20 timing is faster than 8GB 9-9-9-24 1600MHz

yes i was reffering to the ram being 1600MHz my timing is 9-9-9-24, i had to oc the ram though, because it registered as 1300MHz but i bought it as 1600MHz, thats on the phenoms end though. i know i got alot tied up in this rig and id love to be able to throw the 212 evo on it and OC the phenom ii x4 and just save the money, put it toward an ssd. even though the phenom is older tech it has served me well at stock clocks. but with the ROG mobo i feel like i can squeeze out alot more performance in th UEFI bios

That is an exceptional motherboard that already have there. You should reconsider going with an 8350, and overclocking it to 5ghz. Yes, the 3570k or the 4670k may be better, but is the cost worth it? That will be no cheap undertaking to switch to an i5 or i7 plus the motherboard (and you seem to have good taste in motherboards, so I doubt you'll skimp out in that department). My advice, get the 8350 plus a Corsair h100i and overclock it to 5ghz with no sweat. You will be hard-pressed to find a better solution for the money if you go that route.

thats what i had my eyes set on was the 8350, when it comes to my electronics i try not to skimp out, i may not get top of the line but quality i try to take into account, i wase in the electrical deptartment in the company i worked with and got to see the quality of PCB boards and intergrated chips and im getting my masters in plastic Injection molding. ive learned alot about quality. i looked at alot of benchmarks but to be honest they dont tell me much. I will say my instructor has been playing arma 2 with me on his I7 ROG laptop and mobile graphics i think the 670m and to be honest my desktop sticks with his i7 laptop. he may get 10-15 more fps that me but factors such as the server we play on, ping and amount of players on server does take its toll. i like the ROG mobos always been attracted to them for their quality. i maily use my ACER 27 inch monitor thats led and its beautiful. sorry for rambling but with the 8350 i know people expected better but thats not to say that the 8350 doesnt perform well. i am stuck in between a rock and a hard place. so get the 212 evo from cooler master oc 965 maybe upgrade to 8350. if i were to go inte lit will be alot of money because the asus rog boards arent cheap and this boards been reliable, im going to check out the h100 cooler and do a little more digging. dont like to jump on a band wagon just because of hear say of intel or amd. just want to make sure i have no regrets thanks all for your input its been very helpful and non biased. i hope to see more input from people.. Thats why i love Toms hardware. best da** forum for geeks out here in the web!

Since you already have the highest end AM3+ motherboard get the 8350. I have built so many computers with the 8350 in it for clients and they love it. Its a huge Increase from a phenom x4 for them too.

ok sold, going 8350 route i appreciate yalls inputs and trying to select bets answer because all were very helpful! i was set on getting the I5 because of the "Superior" performace gain, but as i have researched more its not noticably more for dropping in a new ROG mobo and I5. AMD it is!!
