I'm new to the forums, but really need help with a problem with my computer, so I thought I'd post it here.

I installed a video card today but immediately afterwards, the computer could not start up again. It gave me the error "Reboot and select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". When I go to Bios setup, in System\ATA Port Information, there are no SATA ports detected, although all are enabled.

I opened my tower and checked but all SATA cables are connected tightly tightly to the motherboard (only have 1 HDD installed). When I touch the HDD, I can feel the drive working, making me think it's not a power issue. Also, I cannot reboot from a CD because the Bios is not detecting an optical drive either.

Finally, when I go to Bios Features, there is nothing listed under boot system priorities.

I then tried to update the Bios, which I did successfully. After rebooting and loading optimized defaults, it gave me a new error screen - "No bootable device is detected. System will enter the BIOS Setup Utility". So nothing really changed.

I've also already tried clearing the CMOS, with no luck.

My computer's specs are:
Mobo - Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1000 GB

Please let me know if you guys have any ideas!

Solution
Try bootiNg ofF of a hirem boot cd. Run hard drive vendor test tool see if your drive controller is dying. Try using master boot record repair to see if it a damaged boot file.

You didn't list what type of video card and power supply you have. If your computer worked fine before you installed your new video card, then remove it and try it again with the old card to see if it boots. I've seen before if the video card taxes the power supply, other devices connected to it may not run properly, but I can't be sure about that with the info you provided.

Sorry, my power supply is Antec 750 W, bronze certification and the video card is EVGA NVIDIA 570. I removed the video card and tested with onboard graphics, getting the same results.

Interestingly, when I turned on my computer for the first time today, the computer booted and I was able to select "Start Windows Normally" from the black menu. I did this and prompted the Start Up Repair. After selecting to not system restore, the computer attempted to repair and then rebooted.

However, after the reboot, it returned to the same error of "No bootable device is detected." In the BIOS setup, it again has nothing listed under boot priorities.

I also tried using new SATA cords, but this did not work either. The pins connecting to the HDD look pretty tight.

Is there anything else I can try? Is there any reason why the HDD would be recognized at first and then disappear?

Thanks,
