Computer booting intermittently

Hi all,

Any help with the following would be greatly appreciated!

We've just moved house, and my computer was working fine beforehand, but now seems to boot only intermittently. I've tried to boot it about 30 times in the last few days, and gotten it to boot maybe 3 times. When it doesn't boot, I get power, all the fans go, but nothing happens on screen. I don't think it's just a graphical problem: If I wait, I don't get the login sound that would normally play, and turning the computer off at any point requires that I hold the button down, whereas shutting it down early in the boot process normally just requires that I press the button normally. I've also tested the monitor on another computer, and it seems fine.

I don't get a beep when I turn it on, but I can't remember if I used to. The HDD light comes on once, for a relatively long time, when I turn it on, and then stays off - again, I don't remember what it normally does.

From my very limited understanding, chances are that something is loose somewhere. I've tried opening the case and making sure everything is plugged in ok, and taking the GFX card out and putting it back in again, but with no luck. Any suggestions welcome!

Specs:
Intel G540 Processor
Biostar B75MU3B Motherboard
GEFORCE 8600GT GFX card
TR2-500 Thermaltake PSU
Seagate Barracuda HDD
Running dual boot Linux/Windows - but I'm not even getting BIOS on the screen, so I presume it's not a software issue.

Let me know if there's any more information you need, and thanks a tonne for any help!

Alex

Thanks for the answers all. I checked everything was seated ok, and tried again, with no luck. Then I unplugged *everything* - with the exception of leaving the motherboard and PSU screwed to the case - and plugged it all back together again, and put the RAM in the other socket. Still no luck (it hasn't booted at all now for a couple of days). Any suggestions for what is likely and I should triple-check? (Are there different signs if the motherboard is the problem than if it's something attached to the motherboard?) Anything else to try?

Or am I now at the stage where I need to see I can get someone to test it part by part? (Which, to state the obvious, will be a real pain!)

Thanks again for the fast replies.

Best wishes,
Alex

Ok, I've taken literally everything apart and put just the necessary components back together again, outside of the case, and still no luck. I've tried multiple times, with and without RAM. I haven't tried the paperclip trick - I've just got the case next to the box with just the power switch plugged in. Since I have power, I can't see that the powerswitch itself could be the problem, and so can't see the need to mess around with a paperclip, but I'm willing to try if I'm being ignorant about how that might cause a problem. Guessing I now need to see if I can get a computer shop to test the PSU and motherboard for me?

Thanks again for the help.
