Dear Tom's forum readers,

I'm reaching out to the community to find someone to back my Paypal claim for a counterfeit copy of Windows 7 that I bought online.

Long story short, I live in a very small community and the local IT professionals here are hesitant to get themselves involved in a Paypal dispute especially when I'm not really a existing customer of theirs (I've recently moved for university, and typically buy my stuff from the online retailer superstore types whom, of course, wont even reply to my emails regarding the issue...)

So I really, really need your help.

Specifically, I need someone who Paypal can consider a professional/expert third party in the industry to back my claim for a refund of a counterfeit copy of windows 7. It would involve putting your name and business in a email to me so I can upload the full email to my Paypal claim dispute. Paypal would also have the ability to contact you to confirm you are who you say you are if they decide they need to. I understand that no TH reader is obligated to do this but it would really help me out a lot.

I know my copy of Windows 7 is counterfeit. The holographic lable peels off the disc, and the COA reads 'made in USA' rather than 'made in Puerto Rico. For distribution in US only'. I've taken various photos of this and would send them to you for you to review.

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help me out with this? Again, I know it's a big ask and requires a fair bit of trust in a unknown member of the TH community, but you'd really be helping me out a lot!

Thanks for reading :)

[I apologize if I've broken any forum rules with this post. My intentions are not harmful.]

Hi

If you can not get a local expert to help
refer Paypal to this Microsoft page and some provide detailed pictures of the DVD

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Software.aspx

Offer to send DVD to them to examine as it should not be returned to pirate as a condition of refund.

It does not need an expert to say disk is counterfeit if you read this Microsoft page

If seller is selling fake Windows software regularly & is in USA report them to Microsoft anti piracy unit

Hi Mike,
Sadly I've already done exactly as you instructed; I have attached Microsoft's 'how to tell' page to my claim explicitly highlighting parts of it relevant to the photos of the disc that I uploaded, but Paypal still wants a third party to get involved (as if to say using the Microsoft 'How to Tell' page isn't already enough...). I'll try ring them up again and explain that I am more than happy to send them the product contents to themselves to inspect.

Hi Someone, I'll jump on in and submit that report too. I tried that exact thing today when i went to my local PC shops (all 4 of them... haha) and got told every time that they wouldn't be able to help out since the copy of Windows 7 in question was not bought from them :/

Hi

Ask Paypal what qualifications they expect from an expert (probably a letter on a impressive piece of headed paper ?)

Would they accept someone working in IT in a company who has some relevant IT qualifications ?

or a letter from Microsoft's anti piracy unit ?

let us know how you get on

regards

Hi Mike,

When i rang Paypal a couple of days ago and asked them what they expected from a third parties confirmation, they told me I needed a letter/email from a IT/software professional with relevant IT/Software qualifications which clearly stated a name and their contact details in case they ever needed to confirm this person actual was who they said they were.

Since my last post I've filled out a Piracy report and sent the copy of counterfeit software to Microsoft. The turn around for this process is understandably long (3-4 weeks). I've uploaded proof of this piracy submission to Paypal but who knows whether they'll keep my case open long enough to receive any sort of response from Microsoft about it. The time remaining for me to get third party backup of my claim is approaching one day left. Unfortunately, Paypal waited until the forth last day of my 'proof submission' time window to let me know my previously submitted proof was inadequate, 2 days of which was on a weekend...
