TATW FPS problems

I've recently download Third Age Total War and having a lot of trouble with it. Anytime a melee starts I get horrible lag, sometimes dropping down to 2fps. I never had any troubles with vanilla Medieval 2.

Regardless of what graphics settings or resolution I play on the fps is always the same. I've reinstalled the game multiple times, downloaded a "Large Address Aware" patch for it. Nothing has worked. My specs:

i5-3470 3.2GHz
Sapphire HD 7870 OC
8gb RAM
Seagate 1tb HDD
Seasonic 620w psu.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Those temps are just fine.

Hate to break it to you, but I got nothin'. :( The only other thing I can think is just make sure your install of windows is clean. No viruses or spyware or anything. You might want to try running some benchmarks (like 3dmark or furmark) on your gpu, then compare them to others who have the same model. It is possible you just have a bad board...or possibly a bad psu. Tho I doubt it on either of those, seems like you are able to do most gaming fine. Benching has a good chance of bringing out any issues you might have, especially furmark as it is very demanding on the gpu. (More like a stress test really.) You will want to note the power being delivered to your gpu during the tests, gpu load...

You might be able to get more help in the TATW forums at twcenter...but I play a ton of that mod, so lets see what we can do :)

First off...TATW is a pretty demanding mod. I have 2 gtx 680's in sli, and in some battles my fps drops to around 20 or so. Of course, I have draw distances set to way the f out there, and transparency AA set pretty high (that one is the killer).

What graphic settings are you using?

Could you attach (or post) your m2tw preferences.cfg file? (this is located in the base m2tw dir)

Unfortunately, I've already posted there and haven't had much success :(.

I know a lot of people have trouble with it, but from what I've gathered most people say it doesn't get bad until the battles are 10k or more.

Medieval 2:

As for TATW, I have shadows off, grass off, vegetation low. Huge unit size, though I haven't noticed any performance increase when playing on lower unit sizes. No AA and Bilinear texture filtering.

Hmmm...yeah, you don't have things turned up crazy or anything. And your card should be able to chew right through it at those settings.

Do you have the latest video drivers installed?

Have you played previous iterations of the TATW mod that worked? (current version is 3.2) Are you running any submods? Like MOS or PCP or Warman's Animations?

Have you had good/bad luck with any other M2TW mods?

That's what I thought :(.

I have 13.4 but I haven't tried installing the 13.8 beta yet.

I have not. I am running MOS. But I removed MOS at one point to see if there was any improvement, but there was no difference.

Well, I have had good luck with Darthmod for it. Although, the battles don't really get too big.

Yeah, sounds like you have issues with mods that modify battle models and skins. Darthmod changes unit values and ai behaviour only... TATW, and even more so MOS, are extra heavy on the video memory. Still tho...a 7870 should be fine. How much video memory does your card have? (I'm guessing 2GB?)

Have you noticed any issues in other games? If so which ones?

Yea its 2GB.

Well, I've been having a lot of trouble with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. I have everything on medium and low and still get fps drops of up to 20 unless I play in 24 player matches. Still happens even then. Red Orchestra 2 I have pretty much everything all over the place, mostly medium. Fps still drops about 20 often.

Think it could be a Windows 8 problem? I find it disappointing that I have a i5-3470 and HD 7870 and still have to run pretty much the same settings as when I had a i3-3220 and HD 7770 :/

To be honest I think both Chivalry and RO2 have performance issues regardless...they are not very optimized. I frequently get fps drops like that in chivalry and I am running 2 gtx 680's. :) Frustrating.

What are your gpu and cpu temps like when running under load?

I guess it could be something to do with drivers in windows 8...though I think it unlikely.

If it is a driver issue there is not much you could do I am afraid. Normally you could wait for an update, but I doubt any new updates will address M2TW issues. Sadly, the total war games seem to have issues the newer systems get. I can't even run the original Medieval or Shogun anymore. I get something like 5 fps in those on my newer systems.

This is pretty true. But I've always thought I was in the minority with that opinion -_-

Normally my GPU never hits 70. It's been awhile since I monitored my CPU temp, but the highest I've ever seen it was 68. I mean, I tried playing Napoleon Total War with Darthmod installed and had the majority of the settings on high or ultra and could manage 50+ easy at the Battle of Waterloo. As for the gpu hitting 70, the only time I've ever done that was playing Skryim with close to 100 mods and Tomb Raider lol.

I've heard that the newer the system, the worse you do with Total War games. I've also heard that they play horrible on AMD cpus as well :O

Any crazy spikes or dips could be indicators and may help identify where the problem is.
