How to record my screen in widescreen?

Hi, I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands. My friends and I recently decided to try and start a youtube channel. It would consist of us playing games such as GMOD and Chivalry together. Because I will be the primary editor, it would be most convenient if I could do the recording as well. The thing is, I have an older Dell 720p monitor (around 2002). It's a 19 inch and shaped like a square. Because of this, when i record, the video is squarely shaped, and there are bars at the end. As this is not optimal for viewing on youtube, I was wondering if there was some way to record my screen in widescreen without just buying a new monitor?

I actually have the same problem, i probably have the same monitor as its a Dell and it atleast 5 years old. Im trying to find out how i can render my videos from the monitor resolution(1280x1024) to widescreen to fit the Youtube player, even if it has to have black bars on top and bottom.
normally when recording it will use the aspect of your monitor, the only way to get around it would be to either set your game to a 16:9 aspect and have letterboxing on your monitor to get the video to record, or to stretch or cut the video when editing it.
