Is ubuntu desktop better than windows server 2012

I just build my server for media dlna streaming and backups, the last step is OS I was thinking of going with windows server 2012 but for some reason many people suggested the Ubuntu (Desktop) is there any real valid reasons ubuntu what are the bigest advantages of ubuntu over windows ? or are there any real advantages ? thanks for all your help guys

  1. Ubuntu is free as are most of the applications is uses. I would think you would want to use Ubuntu Server vice the Desktop variant for your needs.

    Another option would be to use FreeNAS (http://web.freenas.org/for-home/) as it supports all of your desired features as well.
  2. Well keep in mind the server version has no GUI standard. If you never used linux command line your diving in the deep end...and you can get the desktop version pretty server esque fast. Or alternatively,and my preferred, install a web gui for ubuntu server.

  3. If I use ubuntu I will be using the desktop version 12.04. Apart from that it is free are there other real advantages?

    Not really no.I got nothing against Ubuntu but neither do I have anything against 2012. Just comes down to preference really and what services you want to run. Some I'd say run arguably run better on unix then they do on windows.
