I know i5 is best for gaming and all that jazz so please keep the arguments aside.

My question is this.

Do I keep my extreme4 970 mobo and get a real nice graphics card or get an i5 and a new mobo and stick with this 7850.

1ST route il have £200 plus whatever I get for my current cpu and Gpu ( 965 BE and sapphire hd 7850) to buy a 8350 and a gpu

2ND route il have 200 and whatever i get for my cpu and mobo but keep 7850.

Im looking to game alot and not be restricted with what games i can play. Medium to high settings is ok but I would like high as possible. High fps too on a 1600x900.resolution

Basically im not interested in which one can get 200 fps on a game when in real world 60 is enough. Would I tell the difference between i5 and 8350 if they played the same game and I had to guess which was which?

I hope you understand what im saying lol. Im also on my phone so excuse any typos

Up the graphics card. i5's and the 8350 trade blows in games, so you won't see a difference there. Though a bigger, better, badder GPU would make a huge difference. Get a 7970 GHz if you have the cash...if not, go to at least a 7870XT or a 7950.

yea I agree, both cpus will not bottleneck any new gpus, and the only difference between the i5 and fx8350 will be in synthetic benchmarks, which are useless to you.

Just get a new gpu, save yourself the time and hassle of selling lots of parts.

A 660ti or a 760 both will give you at least 60fps on any game on ultra at 1080p (900p should be EZ). Anything higher will be for those who run multi-monitor setups or those who swear that they can feel 120fps even though they have a 60hz monitor (also bragging rights :p).

I have assembled a system running fx8350 with 2 760s in sli and it ran like a dream.

Are you having issues with any games currently? The 965 BE is still a solid CPU and the 7850 should be fine for most games at 1600x900. I don't think an 8350 would be that much of an upgrade for you and I don't really think a new GPU is necessary to play most games on high settings at that resolution.

I would save for a complete system upgrade maybe a year or two down the road and buy a higher res monitor then as well.

Have a baby due in a few weeks so I need to get what I can now and be abit future proof for a good few years. As for this 965 be im pretty sure the 8350 will fly compared to this. Trying to play armah 2 is a nightmare. I also do not overclock at all. Except for the 4.2 turbo thing on the 8350

There have been updates since those benchmarks from a year ago that make the gap quite a bit bigger...and Arma 3 is supposed to be more AMD friendly as well...

Powerphase pertains to VRMs, you'll only need to worry about that if you overclock heavily. On a 970 series MB you can get a decent OC without too much issue, just try to get as much as you can at factory voltage before you go trying to do any more than that.

consoles now use 8 cores

~3 years time FX8350 would blow the crap out of i5 just because it is octa core

most games have some sort of ports

e.g rockstar already made the game gta 5 but havent developed it for next gen and pc.
they have two options
1. redo all coding
2. port from consoles to next gen and pc

if option 2 is what they pick (imagine they do this in 3 years time) it s obviously going to run better on octa core pc

Well I think the 8350 it is. Also I have a CM 212 + cooler and HAF 912 case with intake and 2 exhausts fans. This enough to keep this thing cool.? What temps am I looking at?

I have mine OC'ed to 4.4 and see idle around 27-30C typically and load will creep up into the high 40s to low 50's, though I have only 1 fan on my CM 212 EVO, and my case has 4 case fans to your 3...so it should be fine.

Show me what you're talking about in Crysis 3?? How do they fare in that game? Bioshock Infinite? Tomb Raider? How about BF3 multiplayer?

Don't bother showing something the OP wouldn't play...they like FPS type games.

When are those from? The 3570k and newer Intel CPUs aren't even on there...and I would bet none of the newer FPS games he would like are included in that since Crysis 3 came out this year, and that's from before the 3570k that came out last year...

As the OP said, hes not interested in getting record setting fps in games. He just playable fps which is MORE then manageable with a fx8350. you might get higher rates with an i7 4770k, but its not necessary to be able to play a game, just good for bragging rights.

I think it would be a no brainer, if having to decide between an i5 and a weak gpu vs fx8350 and a strong gpu for gaming. People even use i3s and fx6300 with no problems.

In games, the benefits of having a strong gpu greatly outweigh the benefits of having a slightly faster cpu (the fx8350 is actually stronger in a lot things other then gaming.)
