Hello fellow partners. I made this thread to adress this problem: My action center says my BitDefender(windows 8 Version - trial version) is off, even though its not. I tried rebooting, to disable and enable but without effect. Also it gives me the option to activate windows defender or bitdefender anti virus but also without effect on both as the message is still displayed.

Does anyone has a opinion on this matter that could help? Thank you for your colaboration, i´m sure this is going to help many people with the same problem.

My best regards,

Sir. Micael Liberal

if its still only a trial i would not go with bit defender, i had nothing but problems, system slowdowns and blue screens when using it.

if you want a decent paid for antivirus then use eset nod 32 or kaspersky.

commodo internet security or avg are good free alternatives, stay clear of avast.

Thank for your reply. So far i havent got any problems using the bitdefender trial version (windows 8 version), i choosed it because its the 2013 number one antivirus by PCMAG.COM. Its actually very reliable. Previosly i had MCAFee trial version on my recently bought laptop and this problem happened once or twice but was fixed naturally. I think it may be a windows 8 glitch or registry problem.

About your opinion on free anti virus, Avast is rated 5.5/6 while AVG is 4.5/6 by PCMAG 2013. Even though i like AVG more than i do Avast, im no expert though.

Thank you, cheers.

from actual experience and not from these magazines bitdefender and avast cause poor system performance under real world conditions, even look on the net yourself, many people on the bit defender forum itself with poor system performance.

i have helped many people fix numerous problems by them removing either antivirus form their pc's.

mcafee is also terrible aswell, nothing but poor system performance.

Well, Mc Afee is even worse in terms of resources usage yes, by the triple in relation to bitdefender, but it depends on entirely on your computer specifications, if you have a powerfull pc then the diference wont be noticed in pratical terms. But yes, Mc Afee its not for everyone. Im using trial versions for now, when im done using them i´ll choose a free anti virus such as avg that im very fond of. I did liked Mc Afee, too bad that it consumes too much resources with the real time scan feature.

Bitdefender is terrible imo, i had it for awhile and it kept freezing up(not responding) forcing me to restart my computer. I use Avast tho, i don't have any problems with it. AVG was alright but it was showing i had viruses on installed programs when there wasn't anything wrong with them. W7 doesn't seem to recognize Bitdefender for some reason or another i ended up having to shut off the notification within the settings in action center.

Like i said previously, i had no problems whatsoever so far. The reason why i´ve choosed to use BitDefender Win 8 ver, its because it got great reviews.

I still am at a loss as to why people choose to pay for AV when the built in Windows Defender (same as Defender + MSE in 7/XP/Vista) and a few second opinions does the same job without using nearly any resources.

I have been using MSE with SAS and MBAM as second opinions on all of my PCs in my house without ever getting a single virus.

Its all about being smart on the web and doing manual scans every so often while also using an app like CCleaner to clean up temp files.

I think, wasn't W7 the first to have Windows Defender? Honestly when i was looking up for a free way of keeping malware off i just followed the tomshardware topic in W7. And that was after using Bitdefender that i was using before W7 came out so i just transferred it over to W7 from Vista. They might have changed it on W8.

Either way if everyone had free antivirus software or went with Windows Defender there either wouldn't be a market for antivirus or there would be a lack of support to keep viruses at bay. If i could afford it i would be giving Avast my extra money. But the other reason people choose to pay for AV is because they think all good AV's are the ones you pay for. Honestly i wonder the same thing why people pay for fruits and vegetables when you can grow them in your back yard (provided that you are doing it according to the law in your community). Paying for AV is understandable though.

I guess its worth to pay for a AV for a corporation, at a business level. For home use, it isnt that mandatory that people should pay for a license. Its all marketing like you said. But windows defender only got 3.5/6, because it only get 75% of the existing virus while payed anti virus average rate is 98% if im not mistaken. But you can read this article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388652,00.asp and others on the web reviewing windows defender.

Well again i just never used Windows Defender, i didn't even know about it until i started receiving updates for it on one W7 machine. It might be a matter of preference whether or not an AV is free or not, it is a good thing that some do provide free protection as it's never any fun to have an unprotected PC in a network & it just encourages hackers to exploit any weakness so really there is no excuse to not have an antivirus protection. As i said though it does benefit from giving your favorite AV company some regular income. They won't have any excuse for not having enough resources to fight any new viruses if people could afford to pay for AV. I can't at this point but again like i said, i would be more than willing to pay for my AV if i had extra money to blow off. :)
