So I previously bought a new 990FXA mother board and memory hoping that I would be ready for when steamroller comes out. Now it seems like FX and the AM3 + sockets might be at the end of their life, or at the very least steamroller won't be coming til late next year. With that in mind I wanted to ask if anyone thought it would be good to go ahead and buy a FX 8350 to get the top of the line AMD cpu for the board? If they are killing off the socket it would future proof me for a few years at least before I had to buy a new motherboard and if steamroller is just delayed I could sell it later and buy a steamroller. Also would a FX 8320 or a FX 6350 be a decent option too?

While the FX-8350 is the top of the line CPU, the FX-8320 is pretty much exactly the same CPU just clocked lower to begin with.
You can get pretty much the exact same overclocking results for both. Undoubtedly if you don't overclock the FX-8350 will provide better performance out of the box, but still either one will be a good buy.

FX-6300 would then provide considerably less performance, but is also not a bad choice if you want to save money.

This.

As with the 8320 -vs- 8350, the 6300 -vs- 6350 will also provide nearly the same overclocking potential as the more expensive model. Go with the less expensive option.

Pop a good cooler on it to get the best OC. A Noctua NH D14 will work better for the 8320. And with the 6300 you can probably get away with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

If you have the room in your case...the Zalman CNPS9900 MAX is a good one...
