Mobo + CPU Confusion with AM3

I am having a problem. I determined the CPU is bad on this system. The motherboard is a M4A78LT-M.

I replaced the Phenom II X4 830 CPU (HDX830WFK4DGM) with an Athlon II X2 but found the pins don't align correctly. It seems to teeter-totter on a pin towards the bottom left. When I turn the CPUs over and compare the pins, there is a 1-pin difference where the pins are off by 1 which makes it not fit. (Yes I am 1000% sure I'm aligning things correctly.)

Now both these CPUs are AM3 right? So why the heck would the Athlon II not fit? Am I missing something? The motherboard clearly states it supports Athlon II... I bought the second CPU from a service center so maybe the item was mislabeled and it was actually an AM2... BUT then I thought AM2 CPUs were supposed to work with AM3 socket?

Please help me ASAP... Appreciate anyone's assistance :)

  1. It could be a FM2 socket Athlon II, which is what AMD calls the APUs without an iGPU.
  2. The box said AM3, though... I'm very confused...

Then it should be AM3, with Athlon II CPUs, it's hard to tell, because that moniker has been used on several different lines.
