When I try to install an OS on my HP/Compaq NX9030, it gets halfway through the install, then goes to the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD drive...", then it stays on that screen. Pressing a key does nothing. This has happened with Win XP, 7, and Vista. Can someone please help?

Solution

Sounds like there could be a problem with either the boot sector on the drive, or with the MBR. You can try the bootrec.exe /FixMbr command line. You'll just have to get into the recovery options using your install media (try your Windows 7 disc) to access a command prompt.

I used Dban to reformat the hard drive. I'm not sure if it deleted both partitions, as it only gave me one choice to reformat the drive. Also, it gets past expanding files to installing files, then hangs (does not reboot). I am using a disc image. Have tried this with Windows XP, 7, and Vista. Same problem every time.

I stand corrected. It goes all the way through the install process, then says "Windows must restart". When it restarts, there is just a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Changed boot order to hard drive, and that's all I get.

It gets all the way through the install process, then restarts. If the CD drive is the first boot priority, I get the "Press Any Key" order. If the HD is the first boot priority, I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
