Discrete graphics card incompatible with integrated gpu

My Pc Specs:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Gene
CPU: Core i5 3570k
Graphics card: Sapphire radeon 7850
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

Previously, my discrete graphics card (sapphire ati radeon 7850) was working smoothly with my integrated gpu (intel HD graphics 4000)(i.e both drivers enabled). Then i did a driver update on the intel HD graphics 4000.

After the restart, i was greeted with a blank screen instead of the login screen (note: the bios POST/ windows loading appears normally).

After multiple attempts, i found that windows 7 was now considering my integrated gpu to be the default one, EVEN if my ati radeon is correctly installed!

A driver rollback on the integrated gpu didn't help.

IF i disable the integrated gpu's driver in windows, and plug in my ati radeon graphics card, windows boots to desktop fine.

Any of you guys might know how to fix this problem, so that both my integrated and discrete graphics card are enabled and enable windows 7 to use my discrete graphics card as default (note: it was this way before the driver update)?

Since you've successfully installed the integrated graphics card driver update, I'd recommend re-installing your discrete graphics card drivers (those currently installed, do not update).

On my notebook, there is a feature to switch between the integrated graphics or the discrete graphics, to save power on less demanding tasks. Can I do the same on desktop PC? I have a B75 chipset motherboard and Intel Core i5-3470 with HD 2500. I also use a Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 graphics card. Does it make sense to switch between integrated and discrete graphics, in the case of desktop PC?

In a desktop situation, the monitor is going to be connected to either the discrete graphics card or the motherboard. There's no easy way to switch save shutting down and switching cables.
