Will DDR2 800 Work on a 533/400 Motherboard

I am trying to install 1gb of ddr2 800 into my GA-8I915P Duo with the 800MHz stick the pc wont boot should it not just lower the ram to match the motherboard?

DDR2 is extremely temperamental, far more so than DDR3. There's also a litany of compatibility issues with older motherboards, particularly those that pre-date the Intel 3 series motherboards which featured a more robust memory controller.
