Solution

Just read my comments carefully. I said you need to monitor your temps and I gave you a good software to do it in my first reply. Touching the laptop is not enough, give us the exact temp of your components, especially the CPU.

Then if your temps are really too high the next step will probably be to re-apply thermal paste, but first you need to make sure it's really a temperature problem.

Also, when was the last time you cleaned it? You mentioned last year when you installed a new HDD, but that's a long time ago. You should clean your laptop more often than this. I clean mine every 3 months using a can of compressed air.

Sudden shut down (not automatic reboot this is something else), but sudden shutdowns are often due to some components overheating.

Did you monitor your temperatures? Hardware Monitor is a good software for that.

Your laptop also seems to be an old model. Core2 Duo are from at least 4 years ago. Did you ever clean it? If you never cleaned it in all these years, the fans are most probably clogged with dust. Use a can of compressed air every 6 months or so to clean your computers.
