Hi everyone, new to the forum. I have an older SR5710Y that I am thinking of upgrading. The reason for this is I just want a hobby to test the waters on how to upgrade and to learn a little of building. Instead of building from scratch, I was just thinking of taking this older computer I have as a spare and upgrading for knowledge.

This is a 32 bit system, i was wondering if it can be upraded to a 64 through hardware upgrades. I was thinking of changing the motherboard and processor. I would like it for gaming. The power supply has already been upgraded so has the graphics card.

I think the case can only be upgraded with a micro ATX board. Is this correct? Also what is your recommendation for the best motherboard to upgrade with it? Also, what processor? I was just wondering if someone could look at my upgrade options for this computer and help me out and also give me some other suggestions.

I appreciate the time.

Solution
Get a 500w PSU from Antec, XFX, COrsair, Seasonic.

Get an fx-6300 and an am3+ motherboard.

Get 8gb (2x4gb) RAM. 1600mhz.

If you want to game, you will also need a new GPU.

Thanks tiny voices. When I first got the computer, I upgraded the power supply to like 600watts and the graphics card to a Radeon HD 4650. I can change both of those if the need be. That is what it currently has in it.

I do understand that changing the motherboard and CPU, new ram would be needed. Currently I can only install 4 gb max due to it being a 32 bit system.

This might be a stupid question, but if I replace the motherboard and cpu, with one that will fit this case, wont there be slots in the motherboard where I can add the new memory? Is it possible by putting in a new motherboard and cpu, i can make this computer a 64 bit system with more ability to add more than 4 gb or ram?

Yes you can do that. You will need to buy new memory. Also what brand is our PSU. Chances are it isn't good quality and needs to be replaced with a unit from Antec, XFX, corsair, Seasonic. Also, if you want to play modern games you will need a better gpu than the one you have now.

Tiny I lied lol. I just took the casing off to see about the PSU. Its was upgraded to a dynex 400 watt, not 600 like i assumed. I apologize.

So tiny, with the information you have now, what would you recommend for a new PSU, Motherboard, Processor, and Ram? I appreciate the help!

Thanks for the help tiny! Any suggestions you would recommend on a am3+ motherboard?

Also, this may be a dumb question, but can I put a psu that is too much for my computer to handle? I have come across a 650w seasonic.
