Is getting a PSU(corsair vs550 85%efficiency) more than what you need is good? not considering the price but considering power consumption? (50% load is where PSU are most efficient)

The average power i need for my system is 90-130.

Solution

It varies from PSU to PSU exactly where efficiency peaks. If only because the wattage rating is somewhat arbitrary - some brands are more optimistic than others with the wattage rating.

Here's an example of a PSU peaking around 50% load:

Getting a PSU with Bronze rating is the definitive beginning and end. As long as it meets that criteria then it's good in terms of efficiency. However, some manufacturers are better than others. So, the Corsair VS550 is made by Channel Well, not the best but ok.

I was under the understanding that a PSU is most efficient at ~70%, as specified in the 80+ certification.
Its not good, but its not bad either. As long as you don't get something ridiculously over-powered, chances are you will remain above 20% load and then your talking single digit percentage differences when it comes to power efficiency.
