Well i am considering getting 2 780's, yet i am got the Cooler Master CM storm scout 2 advanced, and the motherboard, Gigabyte GA-z87x-UD4H mobo. I am wondering whether or not it would be "smarter" to get 1 reference and a non-reference from Asus. I ask this as i am wondering whether 2 non-reference would be too "close"?, heat wise.

Thank you in advance :)

nah 2 non reference will still be better. I have 1 non reference 660ti and 1 reference 660ti (one blows air out the back) and the reference one sucks.

It gets about 85c and is twice as loud as my non reference (msi twinfrozr card)my twice frozr card gets 65c max.

non reference ones will be both cooler and better designed, and quieter!

If you have a bad case with no airflow though, it might be a smart idea, since non reference designs blow hot air inside the case. if not, don't even bother with reference designs
I like the idea of getting one or two reference cards for SLI to vent the heat outside the case. It's not necessary though if you have good case airflow to take away the heat with a case fan. The key is to avoid hitting that 80c GPU throttling temperature, which the reference designs tend to skirt a bit more closely than the DirectCU coolers do. Whether the external venting is enough to counteract the more efficient cooler is hard to say, but depends on your case ventilation. With decent case ventilation, you should be able to go with two DirectCU's which will be quieter.

Thats it, i heard that the stock cooler for the 780 isnt all that bad, so thats why i also questioned whether it might be a bit better to have one of each yet, i have been reading different oppinions, and it seems as most think the 2x non-reference is better :) Thank you for the answer though :D.

one more question though, would any one you know anything about whether or not the i5 4670k cpu would bottleneck a 780 2-way sli?, or would i need to get an i7? :)

how did you SLI a non reference card with a reference card?

I can't seem to SLI my Gainward GTX 660ti Ref. Card with my Gigabyte GTX660Ti Windfore OC

You can SLI any card as long it has the exact same chip. They don't have to be the same clock speed, have the same VRAM (although pointless to not have the same as it uses the smaller VRAM anyways), etc.
