I am in the process of building my pc and I'm in the market for a 24" monitor. I am a pretty big gamer but I'm an architectural student as well and use a lot of 3d modeling programs and I use adobe programs too (mainly photoshop and illustrator).

Now my question is should get a monitor with a high resolution like 1920x1200 or a gaming monitor with 120hz with just 1920x1080

for the high resolution monitor i was thinking about the:
ASUS PA248Q 24-Inch LED-Lit IPS Professional Graphics Monitor

and for the gaming monitor:
BenQ XL2420T Professional Gaming Monitor

Will a monitor with higher resolution be better for me overall with gaming and school or a 120hz monitor? My budget is about $400 but willing to pay a bit more

Thanks,

Hi winki,
welcome to Tom's hardware.

I have a very good monitor for you. Namely, the ASUS VG248QE. It has 1ms response time and 144Hz.

Unfortunately your photo editing needs and your gaming needs are diametrically opposed to one another.....

For gaming, the Asus VG248QE is hard to beat..... editing Grandmas anniversary picture on it may have her come out looking a little to pale or worse like a Madam. :)

IPS models can typically "get by" with a reasonable acceptable experience in gaming.... but in side by side comparisons (I have The Asus 144 HZ and the Dell IPS upstairs) the IPS looks less sharp, a bit "washed out" .... kinda like those laundry commercials where ya used the wrong detergent and ya colors aren't as bright anymore ... and a bit ghosty w/ blurred edges sometimes.

Use published response times and lag times on IPS panels as nothing more than amusement..... If ya visit reputable review sites, you will see those 3-5 ms advertised response times climb into the 120-20s.
