I want to get my fx-6300 as close to 5ghz as I can but when I get to 4.7ghz and run prime 95 it gets to 65 Celsius fast... But playing games or other programs it doesn't go past 50 Celsius.

Hi,

If you can get fx-6300 @ 5 ghz and in games it doesn't go over 50 c, then your fine.

Prime95 tends to get chips really hot. Just monitor in game to be sure you don't fry your chip.

Its up to you if you want to continue running at 4.7Ghz. I would invest in a better cooler though, you certainly cannot get to 5Ghz like that.

Get a good aftermarket cooler such as the H100 or Noctua NH-14 and you will be able to overclock the 5ghz and have a safe CPU temperature, remember temperatures, especially CPU temperatures fluctuate incredibly fast. Make sure your motherbard can support such a big overclock and your PSU. Your temperatures under full load are safe.

Yes I have a corsair H80 and formula 7 thermal paste which I thought would be sufficient to keep it within a good temp range

I have an FX-6300 air cooled by 212 Evo. The cpu is currently set at 4,8ghz. It runs reliably all software applications I use without crashes. In terms of torture testing, on AMD's Overdrive, it runs for about 7 minutes before some computational error ends the test, but not blue screen. In my opinion that is just fine and I will make further attempts at higher speeds. In terms of temperatures, I have seen 70 degC on many occasions, which is about 36degC hotter that the MB itself.
