New Build: Stick with Windows 7 or try 8.1 Preview?

I just built a new system and have installed Windows 7 Home Premium, the OS I am familiar with. Eventually, I will probably go with a fresh install of a retail copy of Windows 8.1 on or around October 18. So, should I try out the 8.1 Preview when my Win 7 "30-day trial" expires?

I have a Core i7 4770K at 4.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SDD, 4 TB HDD. ASRock Z87M OC Formula mobo, 2x EVGA GTX 670 FTW (SLI). I like gaming at 1080p "Ultra," do video transcoding, internet web browsing, media and photos, etc.

I am trying to avoid paying for a new copy of Windows 7 if I will soon buy 8.1... Thanks for the advice.

Wouldn't touch 8.1 preview, you will need to rebuild when 8.1 RTM is released as no upgrade path. Go 7 and then switch to 8.1 when you fancy a refresh.

I personally wouldn't use 8.1 Preview on my primary system. Going to the release version from the current preview 'might' require a full reinstall.
I have it running on a secondary laptop, and I like it. But as it is only a preview....no critical data is involved.

If you're going to go to 8.1 when it is actually released, I'd go with 8 now. Instead of 7 now and then 8.1 later.
