Why is CHKDSK not telling me about bad sectors?

So I hooked up a hard drive externally, did the thorough format, then entered command CHKDSK /R F: and it ran the scan and didn't even tell me anything about bad sectors. I expected to see "0 KB in bad sectors" but that line is just simply not there. I ran the scan again--same thing. What is going on here? Why isn't it showing "0 KB in bad sectors?"

Windows XP, SP3.

I have run CHKDSK scans many times on many different drives that are similar to this drive and it did tell me about the bad sectors on all the other drives. This is the first time, in fact, that CHKDSK has not told me anything about bad sectors.
