I've got a 2011 socket i7 cpu with a single cpu motherboard, and I'm looking to upgrade my rig to a dual cpu xeon rig.
Can I do it in three steps like this?
I get the motherboard first, and run the i7 in it, and replace it with a xeon and then lastly get the second xeon?

Solution
On the old non-xeon boards you could use a cpu "terminator" loopback plug, you might want to ask the store selling the xeon boards if that is possible. Also check if the xeon board supports the voltage & bus freq. of your current i7.
