Using USB HDD through a USB extension (1m)

Hi,

I've got on of those Seagate USB HDD of 1Tb ( http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/expansion-hard-drive )
It works fine but the usb cable is too short.

My question is, should I use it through a USB extension of about 1 meter?
I mean, the extension cable is not as thick as the HDD's. Will it cause any damage or data corruption?

If the drive is USB 3.0 and you go to far, all controllers seem to act different. In USB 2 mode, it seems you can just go forever

My H55N USB3 board will just drop to USB 2.0 speeds
My X58A UD5 just keeps on going even with a 6 foot cable + 3 foot extension
My Maximus IV Gene-z will simply keep dropping the drive unless it is idle(glad it has e-sata).

It is a shame that USB 3.0 acts different on every board I own.

This is why you see so many people with questions about disconnecting usb3 drives. Some solve it with new cables and others solve it with new cards or even switching brands. Honestly was very disappointed in USB 3.0 reliability/comparability on some parts.

As I'm here and you guys seems to be quite experienced on the matter...
That same HD is encrypted with truecrypt and mounted and dismounted through a script.
Once the volume is not mounted on truecrypt (so there's no file I/O being done), is it safe to unplug it without "safe eject" the device?

by default Windows makes external drives optimized for quick removal. If you did not mess with the default settings, you should be safe to remove after you are done using it. I still use the safe removal out of habit.
