Backup Help: What is the best way to make an image of my entire PC and be able to incrementally update it when I want it to.

In my build, I have an SSD as my boot drive running Windows 7 and a 2TB HDD as my storage drive. I bought a 3TB external HDD to use as my backup drive, and ideally I would like an exact image of both my hard drives to be on the backup disk. Is there a program that will do this for me? Also, it would be great if I could ask it to update the backup it has already made, rather than continually re-cloning the disks and deleting the previous version. Thanks for any help.

I am in the same position as you with almost identical hardware, ie a boot disk and a 2tb data disk. And Windows7. The rescue CD will work ok...

use windows 7 own backup utility ... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/ you can also do incremental backups.

I did look at Windows Backup but was deterred because of all this stuff it said about not backing up program files linked to registry entries or something, and truth be told; I didn't quite understand what any of it meant..thank you for the article I'll post back with questions if I have them

Ok, so I took a look at the article and it all looks good, I am alright with creating a brand new image every week or so (there doesn't seem to be a way to make images incremental) however, would the backup be completely useless without the repair CD? For example, if my hard drives went down would I need the repair CD to be able to essentially re-create the system as it was before. One last question, would I need to make a new CD along with each new system image? or would one CD created at the first backup be able to restore an image farther down the line? Thanks for any help whatsoever.

I am in the same position as you with almost identical hardware, ie a boot disk and a 2tb data disk. And Windows7. The rescue CD will work ok any time you need to restore your PC. No need to make a new one each time. You can even boot your original Win7 CD and it wil lead you to the point where you must specify where the image of C: is.
