I have a poweredge 1950 Gen II it has a SAS 5i, and im guessing thats intergrated?
It seems its a card behind or on top of the DVD drive. I attempt to install windows server 2008, but when it comes to the page where you select HDD to install, it asks for me to load drivers. Im curious as to which drivers i need and how to install them do i have to make another USB bootable or just download the appropriate driver and run the exe and put the files on a USB drive?

Do i need SAS i5 Drivers, or Hard drive Drivers

for test install im using a 80GB WD sata drive
since it is on a SAS controller do i need to use SAS-non-raid Drivers or ATA serial drivers?
im so lost any info helps

More about : poweredge 1950 sas card installing hard drive drivers

mspencer,

I'm way out of my depth here as I have very little knowledge of servers. However, I have an LSI SAS /SATA controller ( PCI-x) and based on having poked about to see how to install it in a Dell Precision T5400 (which is quite closely related to a Poweredge 1950), I'm taking a wild guess that you need something from this page>

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...

> or similar page- namely the appropriate driver .exe for the SAS 5i controller. These .exe's have TXT instructions on how to install and I think that is done from a disk or external drive and with BIOS configuration in setup.

Just a thought. I hope others more knowledgeable will comment.

Someday computers will be useful tools that improve our lives!

mspencerl87,

Yes, I think you are right to check the drive type compatibility as the SAS and SATA may vary. In the case of the LSI 3080X though, the drivers were the same for SAS and SATA, but every company may have their own way of doing things. My understanding is that SAS drives have two ports for communication- in case one fails the drive can still be accessed, and SATA has one port. That may or may not be fundamental from a driver perspective. All I know is from my brief flirtation with LSI controllers that appear to be able to control both types.

Also, the drivers versions may vary as the Poweredge 1950 was probably sold new with at least XP and Vista and with BIOS updates fro users into the Windows 7. The drivers on that page are listed as compatible with the Poweredge 1950 using Server 2003 and if you go through those listings they are linked by version that correspond to BIOS version. My Precision T5400 is supposed to be very similar to the Poweredge 1950-and arrived with BIOS A06 (Vista) but is now the latest > A11. All this leading up to the thought that means you might upgrade the BIOS and use the driver version (or newer) that corresponds to Server 2008. There appear to be versions for the SAS drivers up to something like 5 / 2012.

As for 64-bit compatibility, there is a note on the Dell driver page, " Dell Update Packages in Microsoft Windows 32-bit format can be deployed on Microsoft 64-bit operating systems by implementing the WOW64 emulation applications. WOW64 is a standard feature on most Microsoft operating systems. For more information, click here. "

Here's hoping! Let us know how things progress.

As for the difference between drives I know you are correct about the extra data link In case one fails. Another note I bought fro. Savemyserver and they update firmware and bios before shipment. I verified this.

Using a different ISO fixed any issues i had. No need to load drivers, go figure.
