New motherboard with old HDD wont boot

I just got a new motherboard as my old seemed to have melted leaving it unable to start. I just bought a new M5A99FX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131851
and have it installed properly (to the best of my knowledge) and everything is installed. At first when I turned it on it looked like a regular boot up screen but had a waring about no keyboard and one about the CPU fan not working. I looked and it was physically spinning but I switched the plug it was in (there were two next to each other). Anyways after that i plugged in my keyboard and went to the BIOS screen to try to set it to boot from my old hard drive which has vista installed on it. I ran it and for a second the Microsoft logo appears at the bottom but then it flashes black and I run into options asking me to start from safe mode or to start windows normally. Any input will help guys, and sorry if its hard to understand my question I will try to clarify if anyone wants to help.

Stick in your OS DVD/CD/Media, restart the computer, press F8, you should be able to get to a "repair windows" option. It will reinstall windows (if you do not format your hard drive, you won't lose your documents). This process will install windows, go through the hardware installation/drivers installation for your new motherboard. You'll end up with a "fresh" installation of Windows, and your data will be retained. Installed programs probably will not.

Keep in mind, windows authentication will identify your new motherboard as a new computer; depending on the version of windows you have, it may not allow you to continue using it on the "new" computer (new motherboard). You can call Microsoft Support and they may reset your...

Of course not.

You have a hard drive with instructions (drivers) on it telling it to look for existing hardware and load drivers for it ..... and then it looks for that hardware and cant find it .... It cant find it cause it melted and you threw it out. Now you are confusing the begeezes out of it cause it cant find what its looking for and does find a whole bunch of new stuff for which it doesn't know what it is.

If the "old" motherboard isn't the same model, or at least in the same line (for example, Biostar TA790GX, TA790GXE - two motherboards that I have and can boot with the same hard drive), you may have a conflict in the drivers. If this is the problem, either format the HDD or create a new partition and do a fresh install of Windows.

You can call Microsoft Support and they may reset your windows key--but they may also tell you that you need to buy a new key (generally unless you use the exact same motherboard as a replacement, they deem it to be a new computer. Since you can usually install only one key per computer (and keys are not transferable).

im having the same issue except when I try to install my windows 7, go to select device to format and none show up. I have a tb wd hdd and ive tried to do it on my external set for hard disk as well. i have a feeling it has a previous version of windows on it and it is causing it to not show up for some reason? (or maybe it has linux on it) also note ive tried installing ubuntu from usb and it turns up disk errors. It has done this for 2 hdds now. one 80g which i decided was probably junk but now this 1tb which is new, and works...
