I have a laptop with Windows 7 installed. I would like to partition it and install windows 8 so I can dual boot to either Windows 7 or Windows 8. My question is: can I use "windows 8 upgrade" or do I need the "Full Windows 8"?

Solution

Not for a new installation, no. The installer is going to look for a Windows installation on that partition. Just put Win7 on that partition then upgrade it

If you shrink your Win7 partition, you can free up enough space to install Win8. You should be able to install win7 on the other partition, then use the win8 upgrade for that partition, maybe. Or just put the full version on the other partition, or install Win7 in a VM, then use the upgrade.

Thanks for the reply.
I already have windows 7 installed. I plan to shrink the drive C (it's the only hard drive I have) and install Windows 8 on the new unallocated partition. What I really want to know is can I use "Windows 8 Upgrade"?
