Price Vs Performance

I have been bouncing around the idea of building a new gaming PC for months now, but haven't found the trigger that will have me purchase a new system. I'm running into the issue that I want the very best system, but find that I'm not willing to pay 2000+ for it. I understand that computers is one of those things that you can spend an unlimited amount of money on. After discussions with a few friends I decided I would ask the question to Toms forum. Where is the breakpoint for price vs performance? I'm not sure this is clear, but in my opinion there is a huge jump from a $500 PC to a $1000 and maybe $1500, but after $1500 what are you getting 5% or 10% performance? I know that PC's are not futureproof, but it seems like a $1500 would be about as future proof as a $2000 system.

Thoughts?

Side note- I'm looking to play Witcher 3/Dragon Age 3 and a few others from kickstart on my 55 inch Plasma screen tv. If any of you have some builds that kick ass, but also don't burn a hole in my pocket book please let me know. I'm considering a small form-factor and mid-size tower. I am leaning heavily towards SFF so I can place it on my entertainment center and not have wires running everywhere.

Thanks
Chris

My opinion is that ~$1,000 is the sweet spot for a machine you want decent longevity from. The computer in my sig I built in December 2010 and still still not breaking a sweat in the games I play. (i.e. BF3 on high settings, RIFT maxed out, SC2 and Diablo 3 maxed out)

For $1k you can get an i5 and a pretty beefy GPU. The question is whether you will need the OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse and what your budget actually is.
