Hello friends,

I wish to have your valuable suggestions from the community for our below scenario.

We have a very old but important server which management has finally decided to upgrade. (Hardware/OS)
The OS is UNITEDLinux 1.0 and the System Hardware is DELL PowerEdge 2550 with 2 externam Disk arrays attached.
The no of disks connected to disk array are 14 Disks (/ 69GB).
The RAID card is : RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 4 (rev 01)

Now we wish to upgrade the system to possibly latest SuSE Linux OS and to a new hardware. The hardware should give
us the reliability in terms of data protection and optimal speed. So maybe RAID 6 would be advisable?
Which RAID card is advisable then? The cost of the hardware is really not the factor.

Any suggestions in this regard would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

If you're upgrading the hardware to an OEM model from Dell or HP, just get one of their own RAID controller cards to go with it. Dell PowerEdge servers can be configured with the very nice PERC (PowerEdge RAID Controller) cards, and HP ProLiant servers can be configured with the HP Smart Array RAID controller card. If you decide to go whitebox, get a controller card from LSI.

If price is not an issue I recommend giving Dell a call. They will be more than happy to give you a quote and answer any questions for you.
